Beersies is designed to help friends keep special relationships alive by finding opportunities to catch up. This policy explains what information we collect and how we use it.

Information we collect

We collect the information you enter into Beersies, including your name, email address, profile photo (if you add one), chosen city or town or manually selected map pin and its name, availability dates, friends, and notification preferences. For a manually selected pin, we store its coordinates and may derive country and time-zone information from those coordinates.

Location and tracking

Beersies does not access your phone’s GPS, location services, or background location. You can choose a city or town, or manually place a pin on a map. When you confirm a map pin, we use the coordinates you selected to identify its country where possible and assign an appropriate time zone. A pin with no country result, such as a pin in the ocean, may be stored without a country and use UTC. We store the coordinates and this derived information so Beersies can find nearby matches and handle availability dates. Google Maps displays the map, but Beersies does not request your current device location.

Beersies does not use advertising trackers or analytics tracking. We do store and process the information you enter because it is needed to provide accounts, friend invitations, availability matching, and the notifications you choose to receive.

How we use information

• Create and secure your account.
• Show relevant Beersies matches to accepted friends.
• Send account, verification, password-reset, and optional match-email notifications.
• Operate, secure, and improve the app.

We process the information needed to provide the Beersies service you request. Optional match emails are controlled by your email-notification setting, which you can turn off at any time.

What friends can see

Accepted friends can receive a Beersies match when your entered availability overlaps. A match can include your name, selected location name or manually named pin, overlapping dates, and the calculated distance between the selected locations. Beersies does not share your complete calendar.

Sharing a match

The Plan Beersies with button opens your device’s share sheet with suggested match details, which may include your friend’s name, the selected location, overlapping dates, calculated distance, and a Beersies link. Nothing is shared until you choose a recipient and an app. The app or service you select will process the information under its own privacy terms.

Sharing an invitation

You can ask Beersies to create an unguessable, expiring invitation link or short-lived QR code. A shared invitation link is active for 7 days and a QR code is active for 15 minutes. Each can be used by up to 20 people. Beersies records the invitation's owner, expiry, type, redemption count and security timestamps, but does not learn whom you send or show it to, which sharing app you choose, or a recipient's phone number or address-book details. Beersies does not access WhatsApp contacts, messages or your device address book.

A recipient may forward a link or show the QR code to someone else. Anyone who obtains a valid invitation can view the owner's name and profile photo after signing in and can choose to send that owner a friend request. Opening or scanning an invitation does not create a friendship automatically, and the owner must accept each request before the users become friends. Invalid, expired, fully used, blocked and revoked invitations use the same neutral unavailable response to avoid revealing private account or blocking information.

Service providers

We use Firebase and Google Cloud to operate authentication, data storage, file storage, and backend services. When you choose a new profile photo, Google Cloud Vision automatically checks it for adult, highly suggestive, or violent content before it is shown to friends. Photos that exceed our safety thresholds are rejected and the temporary upload is deleted. We use Google Maps to display the optional manual pin picker. When you confirm a manual pin, the device platform’s geocoding service may process its coordinates to identify a country; on iOS this service is provided by Apple, and on Android it is provided by the geocoder configured on the device. We use SendGrid to send optional match emails. If you use the share button, the messaging, email, or other app you select processes the shared details. These providers may process the information needed to provide their services.

Beersies is used worldwide. Your information may be processed in New Zealand, Australia, the United States, or other countries where our service providers operate. We use established providers and take reasonable steps to protect personal information when it is processed internationally.

Your choices and rights

You can update your profile, remove your profile photo, change or delete availability, turn match emails on or off, and delete your profile in the app. Removing your profile photo deletes the stored photo and clears it from your account. Deleting your profile permanently removes your authentication account, profile, photos, availability, friendships, invitations, matches, blocks, notification preferences and temporary authentication-email records.

You can ask us about the personal information we hold about you, ask for a correction, request deletion, or object to certain processing where your local law gives you that right. You can also ask for a copy of your information. Email hello@beersies.org to make a request or raise a privacy concern. You may also have the right to complain to your local privacy or data-protection authority.

How long we keep information

We keep your information while your account is active and only for as long as needed to operate Beersies. When you delete your profile, we remove the active account data listed above. A safety report may be retained where reasonably necessary to investigate abuse, protect users, meet legal obligations or establish, exercise or defend legal claims. When an account involved in a retained report is deleted, we remove that account's direct Beersies user identifier from the report and record only that the relevant account was deleted. The report category, optional details, status and moderation outcome may remain for those limited purposes. Other limited technical, security or legal records may also be retained only where reasonably necessary or required by law.
